The Human Eye and the Colourful World

Class 10 Science • Chapter 11
Complete Detailed Notes

📘 Chapter Introduction

The human eye is a natural optical instrument that enables us to see objects around us. It works in a way similar to a camera because light entering the eye is focused to form an image on the retina.

In this chapter, we study the structure and functioning of the human eye, accommodation of the eye, defects of vision and their correction. We also study atmospheric refraction, refraction through a prism, dispersion of white light and scattering of light.

1. Human Eye

The human eye is one of the most important sense organs. It allows us to detect light and form images of objects. The eye contains several parts that work together to control the amount of light entering the eye, focus light and send visual information to the brain.

Major Parts of the Human Eye

2. Formation of Image by the Human Eye

3. Power of Accommodation

Distant Object

Near Object

Definition: The ability of the eye lens to adjust its focal length so that objects at different distances can be focused clearly on the retina is called accommodation.

4. Near Point and Far Point

Near Point

Far Point

5. Defects of Vision

6. Myopia – Near-sightedness

Cause of Myopia

Image Formation in Myopia

Correction of Myopia

7. Hypermetropia – Far-sightedness

Cause of Hypermetropia

Image Formation

Correction

8. Presbyopia

Causes

Correction

9. Cataract

10. Refraction Through a Prism

Important Terms

11. Dispersion of White Light

Spectrum

VIBGYOR

Violet light has a shorter wavelength than red light, while red light has a longer wavelength.

12. Formation of Rainbow

Basic Process

13. Atmospheric Refraction

Definition: Refraction of light caused by the continuously changing optical properties of the atmosphere is called atmospheric refraction.

14. Twinkling of Stars

Exam Point: Twinkling of stars is associated with atmospheric refraction.

15. Advanced Sunrise

Advanced sunrise is an effect associated with atmospheric refraction.

16. Delayed Sunset

Delayed sunset is also associated with atmospheric refraction.

17. Scattering of Light

Factors

18. Why Does the Sky Appear Blue?

Visible light में shorter wavelength components relatively more strongly scatter होते हैं।

Remember: Blue colour of sky is explained using scattering of light.

19. Why Does the Sun Look Reddish at Sunrise and Sunset?

Hence the Sun may appear reddish or orange near sunrise and sunset.

20. Tyndall Effect

Examples

21. Myopia, Hypermetropia and Presbyopia

Defect Main Problem Common Cause Correction
Myopia Distant objects not clearly visible Excessive convergence / elongated eyeball Concave lens
Hypermetropia Nearby objects not clearly visible Insufficient convergence / shorter eyeball Convex lens
Presbyopia Reduced accommodation with age Reduced flexibility / muscle effectiveness Suitable corrective lens arrangement

22. Refraction, Dispersion and Scattering

Phenomenon Meaning Example
Refraction Bending/change in direction of light when it travels between media. Pencil appearing bent in water.
Dispersion Splitting of white light into constituent colours. Spectrum from a prism.
Scattering Redirection of light by particles. Blue sky and reddish sunrise/sunset.
