When white light passes through a prism, its constituent colours can separate because different colours undergo different amounts of deviation in the prism. This phenomenon is called dispersion.
The commonly remembered sequence of visible colours is: VIBGYOR — Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red.
A rainbow is a natural optical phenomenon produced when sunlight interacts with water droplets in the atmosphere. Refraction, dispersion and internal reflection of light within droplets contribute to the observed coloured arc.
